Introduction

The Sayyid are one of the larger segments of Muslims in India. The word literally means "master"; the closest English equivalent would be "sir" or "lord". Some Muslims use the term sayyid for the descendants of Abu Talib, uncle of Muhammad. Sayyid ancestors migrated to India from different parts of Iran.

Ministry Obstacles

The Sayyid may have an inadequate understanding of who Jesus truly is, the Son of God, deity.

Outreach Ideas

Christian workers need to build good relationships with the Sayyid people, friendships based upon trust.

Pray for the Followers of Christ

Pray the followers of Christ that will soon be found in the Sayyid community will become well established in the faith, fully trusting in Christ for their eternal life and for power to live the present life. Pray they will live holy lives.

Pray for the Entire People Group

Pray for God's blessing, strengthening and healing of families and communities within the Sayyid people through the abundant life Jesus offers to all who call on His name. Pray they will increasingly hunger to truly know and follow Jesus (whom Muslims call Isa al-Masih).

Introduction

The word Sayyid literally means "master", and the closest English equivalent would be "sir" or "lord". Some Muslims use the term sayyid for the descendants of Abu Talib, uncle of Muhammad. Sayyid ancestors migrated to India from different parts of Iran.

Sayyids are usually well-educated professionals. Many are successful in business, so they have a vested interest in making sure businesses prosper. Those who are not educated generally are farmers or take servant jobs in the cities.

Sayyids make up less than three percent of the Muslim population in India. They are equally divided between the Shi'ite and Sunni sects of Islam. A small minority are involved in the mystical practices of Sufism.

Ministry Obstacles

The Sayyids almost certainly have an inadequate understanding of who Jesus truly is, the Son of God, the only way to salvation.

Outreach Ideas

Christian workers need to build good relationships with the Sayyid people, friendships based upon trust. This will take much time, love, and effort. Many Sayyids are truly seeking spiritual truth, so pray that they will respond to those who take Jesus to them, the One who is the Truth.

Pray for the Followers of Christ

Pray that followers of Christ will soon emerge from the Sayyid community and become well established in the faith, fully trusting in Christ for their eternal life and for power to live the present life. Pray they will live holy lives that will draw others to the Savior.

Pray for the Entire People Group

* Pray the Sayyid community will increasingly hunger to truly know and follow Isa (Jesus) as he is referred to in the Koran.
* Pray that God will open doors for Indian believers to lead Sayyids to His Word and to the Savior. May this encourage them to receive salvation and the love of Christ as their source of peace and joy.
