Introduction / History

The Kalal of India sell alcohol by tradition. They are not vegetarians and rice is their main food.

The Kalal in West Bengal marry within their own group. They have adult marriages through discussion. Divorcees can marry again. The oldest son becomes leader of the home when the father dies. Male children are circumcised when very young. They bury the dead. The Kalal here sell alcohol while others have shops or work in agriculture. They are followers of Islam. There is a Caste Council that judges matters. Generally they do not like family planning.

The Kalal in Bihar have birth and marriage rituals. Some have businesses while others work in cultivation for example. They use family planning, traditional and modern medicines and have their children educated.

The Kalal in Orissa speak, read and write Oriya. The oldest son becomes in charge of the home by inheritance. They have birth and death pollution periods. Most of them work in cultivation. They have Caste Councils and are Hindus by religion. They have their children educated.

The Kalal in Madhya Pradesh speak Chhattisgarhi and Hindi and read and write in Devanagari. They use Sinha as the surname for themselves. They have birth and marriage rituals and they cremate their dead. Many work in agriculture and some in government work. Modern medicines and family planning are used by them and their children are educated.

The Kalal in Maharashtra have birth and marriage rituals and the dead are cremated. The sons inherit the property with the oldest son in charge of the home. Some of them work in agriculture and some have shops and hotels. Many can read and write.

With the Kalal in Karnataka, some are Hindus and some are Muslims. They speak mainly in Hindi. Divorce is not allowed. A widower can marry again. The oldest son becomes in charge of the home by inheritance. They have birth and marriage rituals and their dead are mainly buried. The Kalal sell meat and some sell alcohol. Leaders settle disputes. Their children are educated and they use modern medicines.

The Kalal in Rajasthan favor child marriages by discussion. Divorcees and the bereaved can marry again. They cremate their dead. Most of them work in business or in agriculture. They believe in education, modern medicine and family planning.

The Kalal in Gujarat are Hindus. Divorce is allowed. They cremate their dead. They work in business and in transport and have their children educated.
