Introduction / History

The Mallah in Bihar speak in Angika, Maithili and Hindi and read and write in Devanagari. They are not vegetarians and eat rice. Hinduism is their religion. They are monogamous. Divorce is allowed and the divorced and bereaved can marry again. The dead are cremated or buried. On the death of the father, sons inherit the property with the oldest son becoming in charge of the home. Fishing is their main work. Boys are educated. They have a caste council to look after them. They use modern medicines and family planning.

The Mallah in Madhya Pradesh speak Chattisgarhi. Girls are educated to primary level while boys are educated further. Family planning is something that is not liked by them.

In Delhi, the Mallah are a scheduled caste and speak Hindi. Some of them live in West Bengal.
