The Raju are a Telugu-speaking Hindu community found mainly in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Historically, the Raju have been associated with military service, landholding, and regional leadership in southern India. Many Raju families trace their heritage to warrior traditions and claim historical links to Rajput ancestry or to military officers who served South Indian kingdoms and empires. Their social identity has long been connected with Kshatriya traditions, honor, and service to ruling dynasties.
Historical records connect sections of the Raju community with the Vijayanagara Empire and other regional kingdoms of South India. Over generations, military service, administrative roles, and land ownership helped establish many Raju families as influential members of Telugu society. Though occupations have diversified considerably in modern times, many families still value education, social standing, ancestral lineage, and preservation of traditional customs.
Today, Raju families live in both prosperous agricultural areas and expanding urban centers. Many work in farming, business, politics, education, government service, law enforcement, and the military. Clan identity and extended family relationships continue to play important roles in marriage and social life.
The lives of the Raju vary between rural villages and modern cities. In agricultural regions, some families continue managing farmland or agricultural businesses, while urban families are often involved in professional careers, administration, education, engineering, law enforcement, or private business. Education is generally highly valued, and many families encourage children to pursue university studies and respected occupations.
Family honor and social reputation remain important within the community. Marriages are usually arranged within accepted caste and clan boundaries, and family elders often help guide major decisions. Traditional customs connected to hospitality, ceremony, and respect for ancestry continue to shape social life, even among younger generations influenced by urban culture.
Meals commonly include rice, lentils, curries, vegetables, yogurt, and traditional Telugu dishes. Weddings, temple festivals, family ceremonies, and seasonal celebrations are important community events. Though many younger Raju are highly modernized and connected to urban life, strong attachment to heritage and family identity remains common.
The Raju primarily follow Hinduism and are often associated with Vaishnavite traditions, though some also follow Shaivite worship practices. Religious life commonly includes devotion to Vishnu, Rama, Krishna, Shiva, Durga, and family or regional deities passed down through generations. Temple worship, festival celebrations, ritual offerings, and household ceremonies remain important expressions of faith.
Many Raju families maintain customs associated with higher-caste Hindu identity, including rituals connected to purity, astrology, family lineage, and religious duty. Belief in karma, rebirth, and dharma strongly influences worldview and moral understanding. In some households, folk practices involving ancestral blessings, sacred vows, and supernatural protection exist alongside formal Hindu worship.
Although Christianity has a presence in Telugu-speaking regions, many Raju still have little understanding of the biblical gospel. Jesus is often regarded as one spiritual teacher among many rather than the crucified and risen Son of God who alone provides forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God. Social status and community expectations can also create resistance to openly considering the claims of Christ.
The Raju need continued access to faithful biblical teaching and culturally understandable gospel witness in the Telugu language. Because education and social respectability are highly valued within the community, thoughtful discipleship, personal relationships, and clear explanation of Scripture are especially important when sharing the gospel.
Spiritually, many Raju have never clearly heard the biblical message of grace, repentance, forgiveness, and salvation through Jesus Christ alone. Strong local churches, mature Christian leaders, and discipleship resources are needed to help believers grow in biblical faith and reach others within their communities. Existing Telugu-speaking Christians also need wisdom, humility, and courage to faithfully share the gospel across social and caste boundaries.
Pray that the Raju people will hear and understand the gospel clearly in the Telugu language and place their faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray that God will raise up mature local believers and church leaders who can disciple Raju families and establish biblically faithful churches among them.
Pray that Raju men and women in positions of education, leadership, business, and public influence will encounter the truth of Scripture and respond with humility and faith.
Pray that the Raju people will be adopted through the People Group Adoption program so that ongoing prayer, evangelism, discipleship, and church planting efforts will continue among them.
