Introduction / History

The Kotia are also called Benatho Oriya. They have subgroups that live in both Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. They speak in Oriya and Telugu, the languages of these two states.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Kotia work in agriculture and as day laborers. In recent years they have been caught in the middle of disputes between the state governments of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, and there is much confusion regarding what resources will be given to them. To make matters worse, the Kotia peoples are often subjected to the influences of Maoist extremists. They are endogamous (they prefer to marry within their group or clan) and mostly monogamous. Divorcees and the bereaved can marry again. Sons inherit the property on the death of the father with the oldest son taking control of the home. They have a community council. Boys get a better education than the girls. They use both traditional and modern medicines.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Hinduism is their religion.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kotia people need safety, power and justice. They need to be able to make a living on their own without being dominated by Maoist guerrillas or state governments.

Prayer Points

Pray that Indian believers will lead the Kotia people to a disciple making movement. Pray that gospel recordings and the internet will provide them with ample materials to have their own Discovery Bible Studies. Pray for intercessors and workers.
