Introduction / History

The Baidya of India live in West Bengal and Tripura. The word baidya means medical practitioners and most of them work in traditional medicine. They speak, read and write in Bengali.

In West Bengal the Baidya are not vegetarians and eat wheat and rice as cereals. Male and female divorcees can marry again but widows are not allowed to. Upon the death of the father, sons inherit the property and the oldest son takes charge of the home. They have marriage rituals and the dead are cremated. They are well educated and use modern medicine.

In Tripura, property is given to the sons and daughters in same amounts. They are mainly landless. They work in several occupations. A village council looks after them and judges in certain problems they have.

Prayer Points

* Pray that the council leaders that look after them will come to Jesus Christ and lead others of the Baidya to Him.
* Pray that gospel materials will lead them to salvation.
* Pray that Indian Christians will lead them to Jesus Christ.
