The Konai, also known as Chasi Konai, are a Scheduled Caste community primarily found in the Indian state of West Bengal, with smaller populations in neighboring regions. The word "chasi" means cultivator, reflecting the community's historical connection to agricultural labor and farming work. Most Konai people speak Bengali, which shapes both their cultural identity and daily communication. Historically, they have occupied a socially marginalized position within the caste structure of Indian society.
For generations, the Konai have lived mainly in rural villages where farming and agricultural labor formed the center of community life. Many families worked as landless laborers cultivating fields owned by others rather than possessing land themselves. Economic hardship and limited educational opportunity have affected many Konai communities over time, though some younger generations are increasingly seeking employment in towns and cities. Family ties, village relationships, and Bengali cultural traditions continue to play an important role in their identity and social structure.
Most Konai families depend on agricultural labor, seasonal farming work, construction labor, transportation work, or other forms of daily wage employment. Because many are landless, financial stability can be uncertain, especially during poor harvest seasons or times when labor opportunities decrease. Rural village life remains common, though migration to urban areas for work has increased among younger people.
Meals commonly include rice, lentils, vegetables, and locally available foods typical of Bengali culture. Extended family relationships are important, and marriages are generally arranged within the community. Religious festivals, village celebrations, and family gatherings remain central parts of social life. In many areas, literacy rates and educational attainment remain limited, creating additional barriers to economic advancement and long-term stability. Oral communication and storytelling therefore remain especially important within community life.
The Konai primarily follow Hinduism mixed with folk religious traditions common in rural Bengal. They worship Hindu gods and goddesses while also seeking favor and protection from local spirit beings and supernatural forces believed to influence health, safety, crops, and family well-being. Ritual offerings, seasonal ceremonies, and festival observances are important expressions of religious life.
Like many rural Hindu communities, spiritual beliefs often include karma, rebirth, ritual purity, and reverence for ancestral or territorial spirits. Folk practices and fear of harmful spiritual influences can strongly shape everyday decisions and religious customs. Though some Christian resources are available in Bengali, many Konai still have little understanding of the biblical gospel and the message of salvation through Jesus Christ alone.
The Konai need greater access to education, stable employment, healthcare, and economic opportunity, especially in rural areas where poverty and landlessness remain common. Improved literacy and vocational opportunities would help many families gain greater stability and hope for future generations.
Spiritually, the Konai need faithful gospel witness presented clearly in the Bengali language and in forms accessible to people with limited literacy. Oral Bible storytelling, audio Scripture resources, discipleship, and strong local churches are especially important. Existing believers in the region need encouragement and training so they can faithfully share the gospel and disciple Konai families.
Pray that the Konai people will hear a clear presentation of the gospel in the Bengali language and place their faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray that God will raise up mature local believers and church leaders who can disciple Konai families and establish biblically faithful churches among them.
Pray that Konai communities facing poverty, limited literacy, and unstable employment will experience practical help, opportunity, and lasting hope.
Pray that the Konai people will be adopted through the People Group Adoption program so that ongoing prayer, evangelism, discipleship, and church planting efforts will continue among them.
