Introduction / History

The Kharkata live in Uttar Pradesh. They speak Awadhi and Hindi and read and write Devanagari. They are not vegetarians.

The Kharkata are monogamous. Marriage is by discussion and a dowry is used. On the death of the father, sons inherit the property with the oldest son becoming in charge of the home. There are birth and marriage rituals and the dead are cremated.

The Kharkata own land. They make baskets with straw and sell in markets for a living. Some work in agriculture. A traditional council looks after them. Hinduism is their religion. They believe in modern medicine and education too.
