Brahmins are the highest of the four varna (major caste groupings) in Hinduism. The historical developments of various Brahmin castes are not clear, as the history of the caste system itself is unclear. There was perhaps a caste system based on personal merit at one time before the hereditary caste system became dominant, as is seen in modern history. Brahmin castes became powerful in the early centuries of the Christian Era through alliances with kings, who granted them landed estates related to temples and temple service.
Traditionally Brahmins have five daily duties; to the gods, to ancestors, to all creatures, to humans, and to study. Thus daily worship (duty to gods) and chanting of sacred texts (duty to study) are an integral part of many Brahmins' lives, even if this is only a token routine for many.
There has never been a comprehensive analysis of all the different types and subgroups of Brahmins. However, there are subgroups that we know of including the Iyer Brahmins in southern India. They speak Tamil as their primary language.
Iyer Brahmins were once involved with all kinds of Hindu rituals, but not today. They do, however, maintain the rites and rituals associated with the dead. Iyers are cremated according to Vedic rites soon after they die.
Like other Brahmins in south India, the Iyers participate in the Avani Avittam Festival. This festival is unique to Brahmins in this part of the world. Most Iyer Brahmin women wear modern, convenient clothing. These women are also in the work force of southern India. This would not have been the case 50 years ago.
In some cases Brahmin subgroups are defined by their theological distinctions such as Madhva Brahmins, who are defined by their dualist theology, though everyone does not actually hold those beliefs. However, many Brahmin castes are made up of people who adhere to all the various philosophical and theological options espoused by modern Hindus, including hard core secularists and atheists. One can never predict what an individual Brahmin might believe or disbelieve!
Brahmins can be reached, but it must be done in a way that they understand. Early in his ministry Jesus’ disciples understood him to be a teacher, but many did not understand his lordship until later. Likewise, Brahmins will need to learn about who Christ is one step at a time. The social status of an Iyer Brahmin can be jeopardized if they decide to follow Christ. Few would dare to take this step. Only those who are extremely spiritually hungry will do so.
Pray that loving believers in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu would share their Lord with the Iyer Brahmins. Pray that these Brahmins would have meaningful, life-changing encounters with Jesus Christ. Pray for hundreds of Iyer Brahmin families to be blessed by following the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
