Introduction / History

The Hari of the Brahmaputra Valley are called Bania Brittal. In Assam they speak Bengali, Assamese and Hindi. They eat meat, fish, eggs and rice. Hinduism is their religion.

They have birth and marriage rituals. The dead are cremated. Upon the death of the father, sons inherit the property. Many of them now work in agriculture.

In West Bengal, the Hari speak Bengali. They are a scheduled caste there. They work in government and private service while some work as laborers. Their literacy level is low, so the gospel will need to be given in oral form too. Family planning is used by them.

The Hari live in Uttar Pradesh and other states too.
