Introduction / History

The Cheruman people are a large group. They live in India's southwestern state of Kerala, where they speak Malayalam, Kerala's language. Traditionally the Cheruman people were serfs, and their name means "sons of the soil."

What Are Their Lives Like?

Cheruman people get married as adults. They are having fewer divorces than they had 30 years ago. In addition to domestic chores, women play an important role in family economic activities. Women have a large say regarding family expenditures. They are involved in family decision-making.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Though the Cherumans are Hindu, they have many opportunities to hear of the ways of Christ. Kerala is about 19 percent Christian, and there are a few Cheruman believers. They have a high literacy rate for a low class people group, and they love to listen to the radio and go to movies. Christian materials are readily available in Kerala's Malayalam language.

Prayer Points

Pray that Christian materials, radio broadcasts, and the JESUS Film will find their way into Cheruman households, and be met by open hearts that are ready to embrace their only Savior.
