Introduction / History

At one time Bodo tribes were nomadic farmers, but now they are settled. The Bodos are a cluster of tribes who were once politically dominant in Assam, a state in India's northeast. They are not culturally or linguistically uniform. Many Bodo tribal people have felt that their needs are no longer being met in Assam, and the way to deal with the situation is to have an autonomous region for Bodo people. They have formed the All Bodo Students Union, which favors autonomy. The desire for autonomy affects Bodo people in all three countries where they live: India, Bangladesh, and Bhutan. Some Bodo people have wanted other ethnic groups out of their homeland. There has been strife as a result. For example, in 2015, a number of Bodo militants were arrested by Indian forces near the border of Assam and Bhutan.

Where Are they Located?

The Bodo are a people mostly living in Assam in India, mainly in the north region of the Brahmaputra River Valley. They also live in Bangladesh and Bhutan.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bodo speak in Tibeto-Burmese dialects, and they read and write in Devanagari. They eat rice and fish and pork. They like to drink rice wine. The Bodo like to dance. The Bodo do weaving and also make bamboo items. Many are farmers.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Some of the Bodo follow Brahmoism which is a Hindu reform movement. Amongst the Bodo there are Christians too. Some of the Bodo follow Bathouism in which they worship ancestors. Bathoubwrai is the main deity in Bathouism. They believe that people come from a mixture of sky, earth, air, water and fire. They like to worship near home or in a courtyard. Betel leaves and rice among other things they use as offerings. Their most important festival is called Kherai Puja and the altar is put in a rice field.

What Are Their Needs?

The Bodo peoples desperately need to put their identity in Christ and his kingdom rather than in political power or ethnicity.
