Introduction / History

In Assam, India there are many Muslims. Islam was introduced to Assam in the 1200s. There is a generic term, “Assamese Muslims” that applies to Muslims who speak the Assamese language. The vast majority of them live in India, but a small number are in neighboring Bhutan.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Assamese Muslims depend on agriculture for a living. Most likely, some of the Assamese Muslims in Bhutan are people who have run afoul of the Indian government and had to flee to a different country.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Assamese Muslims are less orthodox than most other Asian Muslims. They are involved in Hindu festivals and customs. In Bhutan, there are so few of them that they pray at a small prayer hall built in Jakar instead of having a mosque for Friday prayer.

What Are Their Needs?

The Assamese in Bhutan need the chance to allow Jesus Christ to transform their lives. They need life to the full!

Prayer Points

Pray for the Assamese people to have the spiritual hunger it takes to seek and find the only savior.
Pray for the Lord to send out loving workers to Bhutan.
Pray for Assamese disciples to make more disciples until their families and villages can enjoy his blessings.
