Introduction / History

The Hanomoreyo are a small, distinct people group in Sri Lanka. Their identity has been shaped by centuries of interaction with the Sinhalese majority and Tamil communities, yet they retain unique cultural markers that set them apart. Historically, the Hanomoreyo lived in rural areas where agriculture was the foundation of life, though modern migration has brought some into towns and cities. Their traditions reflect both the island's Buddhist heritage and the influence of South Asian cultural currents, while their history has also been marked by the challenges of colonial rule and civil conflict.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Hanomoreyo live in villages where farming, fishing, and small-scale trade provide the main sources of livelihood. Rice cultivation is central, supplemented by vegetables, coconuts, and spices. Family life is organized around extended households, with grandparents, parents, and children often sharing responsibilities. Celebrations are tied to Buddhist festivals such as Vesak, as well as seasonal harvest rituals.

Weddings and births are marked by elaborate ceremonies that reinforce community bonds. Food is a vital part of their culture, with rice and curry forming the staple diet, flavored with chili, coconut milk, and local spices. Meals are often communal, reflecting the importance of hospitality and kinship.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Hanomoreyo are almost entirely Buddhist. Buddhism shapes their worldview, emphasizing karma, rebirth, and devotion to the teachings of the Buddha. Temples serve as centers of worship and community life, and religious practices include offering flowers, lighting lamps, and chanting scriptures.

Christianity has had little impact among the Hanomoreyo, and most remain unreached with the gospel. The presence of evangelical believers is minimal, and many have never heard the message of Christ explained in a way that connects with their cultural context.

What Are Their Needs?

The Hanomoreyo face both spiritual and physical challenges. Spiritually, they need opportunities to encounter the gospel in ways that resonate with their traditions and worldview. Many have little or no access to Christian fellowship or teaching.

Physically, the Hanomoreyo experience the struggles common in rural Sri Lanka, including economic instability, limited educational opportunities, and the lingering effects of past conflict. Families often strive to preserve their traditions while adapting to modern pressures, and many long for hope and stability in uncertain times.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Hanomoreyo will hear and understand the good news of Jesus Christ, and that local believers will be strengthened to share their faith with courage and compassion.
Pray asking God to raise up workers from within Sri Lanka who will see themselves as part of the mission force, bringing light to unreached groups.
Pray for peace and stability in their communities, for economic opportunities that allow families to thrive, and for healing from the wounds of past conflict.
Pray for the small number of Christians among them, that they would be bold in witness and faithful in discipleship.
Pray that the Hanomoreyo will discover the blessing of Christ, who offers answers to life's deepest issues.
