Introduction / History

The different Somali Bantu groups are united primarily because of the racial discrimination they face within Somalia. Most Somalis will not intermarry with Somali Bantus, and some will not even eat with them or enter their house. During the civil war in Somalia, Somali Bantus were one of the most vulnerable groups and suffered horribly at the hands of clan militias and criminal gangs. Many have left Somalia for safer lands like the United States and Canada.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The daily stresses of navigating through a new culture while seeking to retain and treasure your heritage make it difficult to become a part of the host community. Many Somalis have found it hard to get work even though some are qualified. Language problems have been one cause. The Canadian government, along with Somali organizations in Canada, are helping young Somalis with work experience, training and other schemes to find work.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Somali Bantu are marginally Sunni Muslim. A few are Roman Catholic. Traditional animistic religion affects their spiritual lives.

What Are Their Needs?

The Somali Bantu desperately need someone to help them until they are ready to stand on their own feet. They need language and job skills. Believers who are able to help them with these needs would be very welcome. They also need acceptance. They have been rejected by Somalis, but they are accepted and loved unconditionally by the Heavenly Father. Who will take them this liberating message?

Prayer Points

Pray for the Holy Spirit to give the Somali Bantu people teachable and understanding hearts. Pray for a strong movement of the Holy Spirit will bring entire Somali Bantu families into a rich experience of God's blessing. Pray for Somali Bantus to become disciples and make disciples who will make even more disciples.
