Introduction / History

The Midgan people of Somalia are also known as Madhiban or Gabooye. At one time, they were hunters. They are one of the low caste communities of Somalia along with the Yibir and Tumals. Midgan people became low caste because they were accused of some wrong-doing to other communities in the past. Midgan people are expected to do leather work and other things reserved for those at the bottom of the Somali pecking order. There are similar caste groups in other parts of the Horn of Africa.

Where Are they Located?

Midgan people live only in Somalia.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Being a tanner is a very unpleasant job. Midgan people must endure the stench of decaying carcasses and the chemicals it takes to process cow hides, making them into leather.

On top of this, they are looked down upon by other people groups in Somalia. Rape by other clans is a common occurrence, and it usually goes unpunished. Midgan children do not go to school because they cannot afford fees and are at risk of mistreatment by other children. They must live in separate communities, because others consider them dirty or polluted. Other Somali clans and ethnic groups will not intermarry with the Midgans. Some of the Midgan people are either barbers or blacksmiths, which are also low-status professions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Midgan people are best described as animists. They believe the world is filled with various spirits that must be appeased or placated. They are not Muslim like the majority Somali population. There are no Christian believers among them.

What Are Their Needs?

The Midgan people need training in areas that will allow them to play an essential role in Somalia. For example, if they learned certain computer skills or ways to improve Somalia's infrastructure, they could no longer be held back. Believers with the right skills might be able to provide this kind of training.
