The Doms (also known as the Doom, Dum or Dumar) have many different stories of their origin but most centre around their becoming an outcast group because of a celebrated slaughtering of a sacred cow. Though most live in India, some are in the other South Asian countries including Pakistan.
The Doms are a colorful community of South Asia. There are so many different clans and sub-groupings that it is hard to generalise about their lives. They have been traditionally defined by the low occupations of alms collecting, grave digging, cremating, drum-beating, singing, dancing, as well as the making of bamboo baskets (sirki) and mats (chatai). In their Muslim communities some have today entered into other labor jobs such as plantation workers, rickshaw-pullers and construction.
Most Dom people are Hindus, but in Pakistan some have adopted the majority religion of Sunni Islam.
The ministry of Jesus among the poor and outcast is a clear call to reach out to the Muslim Dom of Pakistan. There are no known workers among the Muslim Dom.
Pray for a spiritual breakthrough among the Dom people in Pakistan.
Pray that God would break down centuries-old bondages that keep the Dom people away from the only savior.
Pray that God would use the Dom people to bring others to faith in Christ.
Pray for loving workers to go to the Muslim Dom people in Pakistan.
