Introduction / History

Historically known for their skills as musicians, entertainers and craftsmen, the Dom have migrated and settled in various regions, including Pakistan. Over time, many Doms converted to Islam, integrating into the broader Muslim society while retaining aspects of their cultural heritage. The Muslim Dom people primarily reside in urban and semi-urban areas of Pakistan, such as Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They often live in marginalized communities and work in various trades, including traditional crafts, manual labor and entertainment. Many Dom families face economic hardships, with limited access to stable employment.

Despite these challenges, they maintain strong family bonds and community networks, supporting each other in times of need. Education remains a priority for many Dom families, although financial constraints often limit their children's access to quality schooling.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Muslim Dom follow Sunni Islam, which shapes their religious and social lives. They observe Islamic practices such as daily prayers, fasting during Ramadan, and celebrating Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Local mosques serve as important centers for worship and community gatherings, where religious leaders provide spiritual guidance. Their faith plays a crucial role in their identity and daily interactions. Like most Muslim peoples in South Asia, the Dom people also worship local spirits which they believe help them with their practical needs.

What Are Their Needs?

The ministry of Jesus among the poor and outcast is a clear call to reach out to the Muslim Dom of Pakistan. There are no known workers among the Muslim Dom people in Pakistan.
