Introduction / History

Most of the Kaniyan live in Kerala. They are classed in the Other Backward Classes group. They speak, read and write in Malayalam. Astrology is the traditional work for them. They have a birth pollution period. Marriages take place at the home of the bride. The dead are cremated. They are Hindus.

Some of the Kaniyan live in the Tirunelveli region of Tamil Nadu. Men take part in Koothu which involves dancing, singing and storytelling. They worship Sudalai. They are very poor and not well educated so the gospel will need to be given in oral form too. They eat rice as a main cereal. The word Kaniyan in Tamil means to.

The Kaniyan live in Karnataka too.

Prayer Points

* Pray that gospel recordings will lead the Kaniyan to Jesus Christ.
* Pray that poverty among the Kaniyan will be addressed.
