The Chaliyan, also known as Saliyar or Saliya, are traditionally a weaving community of southern India. Their homeland extends across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Weaving has long shaped their occupational identity, social organization, and cultural heritage. They are associated with textile craftsmanship and with the wider weaving traditions of South India, where skilled handloom work has historically played an important economic and cultural role.
Many Chaliyan people continue to work as weavers, maintaining a connection to their traditional occupation. However, modern economic changes and increased mobility in contemporary India have opened opportunities in a variety of professions, and some families have moved into business, service, education, or other forms of employment.
Family and community identity remain important. Like many caste communities within Hindu society, some Chaliyan seek greater social recognition or higher perceived caste standing. Daily life may include balancing traditional values with modern education, work opportunities, and changing economic realities. Community life is often shaped by family networks, work responsibilities, local customs, and regional cultural practices.
The Chaliyan people practice Hinduism. Their religious life reflects the diverse expressions of Hindu belief found across South Asia. Worship commonly includes devotion to deities of the Hindu pantheon through temple attendance, rituals, offerings, prayers, flowers, and incense offered in hope of receiving blessing, protection, or spiritual benefit.
They also participate in major Hindu festivals such as Holi, Diwali, Navratri, and Rama Navami. Their religious identity is closely tied to community customs, family observances, and the spiritual traditions that shape Hindu social life.
The Chaliyan people need opportunities to hear and understand the gospel of Jesus Christ in ways that are meaningful within their language and cultural setting. They need to encounter the abundant life Jesus offers to those who trust Him and follow His lordship.
Practical needs are also present as families navigate economic change, occupational transitions, education, and community development. Access to quality education, healthcare, stable livelihoods, and supportive social networks can strengthen individuals and families alongside faithful Christian witness.
Pray that the Chaliyan people will be adopted through the People Group Adoption program so that sustained prayer, loving partnership, and future gospel engagement will reach their communities.
Pray that Christians will lovingly and faithfully reach out to the Chaliyan people, and that workers will help nurture a disciple-making movement among them.
Pray that a deep spiritual hunger will arise among the Chaliyan people, leading many to seek and follow Jesus Christ no matter what the cost, including family and community leaders.
Pray for the physical needs of the Chaliyan people, including healthcare, schools, clean water, economic opportunity, and support for families facing changing livelihoods.
