Introduction / History

The Slavs are ancestors of the Russians who speak Russian which is an east Slavic language. In the years of the Soviet Union, most Russians were not allowed to leave the country and there was not freedom of religion. Since the end of the Soviet times, people have left the country and there is freedom of religion. Most of the religious are going to the Orthodox Church. Russian evangelicals are not too many.

Russian people tend to be superstitious. They are reserved in public but more friendly in private. Older people are respected. They tend to get married mainly in their early twenties. Births among Russians are low and it has been reckoned that the population will decrease. Many families have just one child.

The Russians like tea and vodka and alcoholism is a problem for some of them. Since the end of the Soviet Union, though, there is much more freedom in Russia it has brought about some problems. Crime has increased and so has unemployment. Some however have become self-employed.

Prayer Points

* Pray that the Russians will realize that they need to do more than go to the Orthodox Church and will give their lives to Jesus Christ.
* Pray that the problems the Russians are having will cause the Russian evangelicals to have success in leading them to salvation too.
