Turaiha in India

Turaiha in India

The Turaiha are recognized as a low-status tribal group present in India. They are Hindu in faith and they earn their living through fishing. They believe they are descended from the Sun god, and their main deity is Sanichar Raja. Turaihas tend to live by rivers or lakes in the Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal states. Fishing is their main income. They also cultivate Singhara (water nut) and make handheld fans and baskets. Brahmins do not enter Turaiha houses.

Ministry Obstacles

The Turaiha ingrain Hindu rituals and customs from their food to working professions. Most Turaiha live in Bihar state, a spiritually dark part of India. They worship multiple deities and have high levels of illiteracy, which means they must depend on oral gospel materials.

Scripture Focus

"Yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will take joy in the God of my salvation."  Habakkuk 3:18

Scripture Prayer

Pray this people group would learn to rejoice in the Lord and His salvation.

Prayer Focus

Pray for better medical care facilities and schools to become available for this community so their children will have a better future. Pray for the salvation of the Turaiha and for gospel-centered groups to bring the good news to them. Pray that new work opportunities will come up for the Turaiha.
