Introduction / History

The Koro people are a small indigenous people group living in the northern islands of Vanuatu, a Pacific island nation in Oceania. They live primarily in Torba Province, within the Banks Islands group—specifically on Gaua Island, in and around Koro and Mekeon villages. The Koro are one of many distinct people groups that make up the cultural mosaic of Vanuatu, yet they remain a clearly identifiable and separate community rather than a subgroup of a larger ethnic population.

Because of their small size and relative isolation, very little written history exists specifically about the Koro as a distinct people group. What is known suggests that their ancestors, like other Pacific Island peoples, were part of long oceanic migration patterns that shaped Melanesian societies over centuries. Today, the Koro remain rooted in their ancestral land and villages, maintaining a close relationship with the local environment and with one another.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life among the Koro people is largely rural and village-centered. They live on Gaua Island, a volcanic island known for its rugged landscapes, fertile soil, and reliance on subsistence agriculture. Daily life typically revolves around tending gardens, fishing, food preparation, and maintaining family and community relationships. Like many communities in Vanuatu, extended family and village ties are central to social life, with cooperation and shared responsibility playing important roles.

Housing is generally simple and built from locally available materials. Transportation is limited, and many needs are met within the village or nearby communities. Access to modern infrastructure such as electricity, advanced healthcare, and secondary education is limited and may require travel to larger population centers, which can be costly or difficult.

The Koro language (Vanuatu) is the primary language spoken within the community, and it is a key marker of identity. While secondary languages may be known for wider communication, especially in church or regional interactions, the Koro language remains central to everyday life. The availability of educational materials and Scripture in this language is limited, which has implications for both literacy and discipleship.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the dominant and public religious identity of the community, shaping festivals, moral values, and community rhythms. Churches often serve as central gathering points and play an important role in education, conflict resolution, and spiritual life.

There is no reported presence of other major world religions among the Koro people, and ethnic or traditional religious practices are not listed as significant in current data.

What Are Their Needs?

One of the most significant needs among the Koro people is access to God's Word in their heart language. Joshua Project identifies the Koro language as still needing Bible translation resources. Without Scripture in their own language, many believers rely on oral teaching, limited audio resources, or second-language materials, which can hinder spiritual growth and discipleship.

In addition to spiritual needs, the Koro face practical challenges common to small, remote island communities. These may include limited access to healthcare, education beyond the primary level, and economic opportunities. Isolation can also make it harder for outside teachers, medical workers, and church trainers to visit regularly.

Despite these challenges, the Koro are not classified as unreached. The presence of Christian faith and some Evangelical believers provides a foundation for local church strengthening, leadership development, and deeper discipleship rather than initial gospel introduction.

Prayer Items

Thank God for the Christian foundation already present among the Koro people.
Pray for the translation of Scripture into the Koro language, so believers can engage deeply with God's Word in their heart language.
Ask God to strengthen local church leaders, pastors, and teachers with wisdom, humility, and biblical understanding.
Pray for discipleship and spiritual maturity, especially among young believers.
Lift up the practical needs of the community, including health, education, and sustainable livelihoods, asking God to provide through local and external partnerships.
Pray that the Koro church would become a light to neighboring communities and contribute to the spiritual vitality of the region.
