The word "Bairagi" comes from the Sanskrit word "vairagya," which means renunciation. At one time they were granted land by Moghul kings.
In India they live mainly in Uttar Pradesh. A small number live in Pakistan’s Punjab state. In both countries they speak Urdu.
There are many cultural, social and economic changes in modern India, but the Muslim Bairagi community maintains their separateness as a community. Their cultural contributions include their qawwali singing tradition. They have also helped develop Urdu literature in India.
Though they are Sunni Muslims, the Bairagi include Sufi practices and beliefs. They devote themselves to specific spiritual leaders, known as pirs or fakirs. Commonly they gather in shrines to celebrate the lives of these leaders. Such devotion to a leader reflects a blend of Islamic and Hindu practices.
Like people everywhere, the Bairagi people need to allow the loving savior to direct their lives. They need his forgiveness for sin.
Pray the Bairagi would see they can enjoy abundant life if they put their trust in Jesus Christ.
Pray for the Lord to intervene in their families, calling people to his side and blessing them in every way.
Pray for Holy Spirit sent workers.
Pray for their hearts to be drawn to the Lord of lords.
Pray for the birth of an unstoppable church planting movement.
