Along with the Tembe, the Mende are the largest people group in Sierra Leone. They also live in neighboring Guinea and Liberia. Some have migrated either to the Unites States or Canada. Most who came to Canada came in the late 20th century or early 21st century to escape war and destruction. Most Mende people in Canada are in Edmonton, Alberta.
The Mende value a woman’s hair. She is expected to grow thick, beautiful hair. Some work in hair salons.
They had trouble adjusting to Canadian society at first; most had low paid jobs. They often work in the oil fields today, but some have started businesses. More are arriving; they have to start the process of adjusting to a new country, but they have others to help them adjust. They have their own cultural associations.
Though most Mende people are Muslims, there is a Christian minority among them wherever they live. They call upon diviners to make things right when there is serious sickness or natural disasters. Mende people believe in the power of witches.
