Introduction / History

The Tiriyo tribe lives mainly in Suriname though there is a smaller community in Brazil.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Because they live in a remote area, the Tiriyo have much independence. They would like to have more contact with the outside world.
They grow manioc for food, but they supplement it with fish and game that they have hunted. Missionaries have tried to help them grow more diverse crops such as bananas and pineapples, papayas and sugar cane, but they have not always been successful.

What Are Their Beliefs?

There were both Catholic and Protestant mission efforts among the Tiriyo people starting in the 1960s. Today they are Christianized, though they still struggle with shamanism as a spiritual stronghold. They are more Christianized in Brazil than they are in Suriname.

What Are Their Needs?

The Tiriyo people need more contact with the outside world.

Prayer Points

Pray for a movement to Christ among the Tiriyo people that will bless them in every way.
Pray for those from Brazil to reach those in Suriname with discipleship materials.
Pray for their medical needs to be met.
