Introduction / History

Mozabite Berbers live primarily in seven cities in and around Algeria's Mzab Valley. The largest city is Ghardaia, an an oasis on the edge of the Sahara. While this is their homeland, they can be found in cities all over Algeria, as well as other cities around the world, where they are known as industrious merchants who bring their wealth back home. Some are earning their fortunes in France.

Where Are they Located?

The Mozabite Berbers who live in France are in urban centers like Paris, Lyon, Strasbourg, Lille, Marseille, and Bordeaux.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many people of Berber descent in France have managed to go into exciting professions in sports, entertainment, or politics, but most have had to settle for ordinary jobs. No doubt many Mozabite Berbers own small businesses given their tradition of being merchants.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Mozabite Berbers are Ibadi Muslims and extremely devout and faithful to their traditional practices. Most members of this Islamic denomination live in Oman, but there are some in Libya and Algeria, including the Mozabite Berbers. They value the bonds of their religious community very highly and go to great lengths to care for the poor and meet the needs of their community. Those who have lived in France for many years might be tempted to become more secular in their spiritual outlook.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mozabite Berbers of France have very little gospel witness. Within their community, Islam is the only spiritual path allowed. France offers secularism and New Age thinking. They need people in their lives who will live out the gospel and explain why Jesus matters.

Prayer Points

Pray for Christ's ambassadors to go to this unreached and unengaged people to deliver the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Pray that the veil of unbelief will be removed from their spiritual eyes and the truth of the living water, which Jesus wants to flood their souls, will burst forth into their hearts. Pray that they will crave the spiritual water that only Jesus offers so much that they will share him with many other Muslims in France.
