Introduction / History

They are located in the Machakos District of Kenya. One particular tribe is located in the village of Muthetheni, within the Machakos District. The village covers many square kilometers, possibly 50 sq. km. or more. There is a small town proper of Muthetheni of approximately 20 - 30 small structures. Muthetheni is in a semi-arid region that has experienced excessive deforestation.

What Are Their Lives Like?

All the local residents encountered were subsistent farmers with many of the men attempting to find work away from home. In most cases women and children share the work of survival at home. There are two brief rainy seasons per year. There was an extended drought in 2008 and 2009. This resulted in the deaths we were told of amongst the Catholic community. A typical day includes a trek of up to three or four km. to dig for water in a stream bed, morning and evening. School beyond elementary is not possible because of cost. Malaria and HIV are the most common health issues.

What Are Their Beliefs?

There are a substantial number of Catholics there. A local clinic attempted modest medical service and is attempting to evangelize through the schools and to reach people by training pastors and planting churches. There are also Mormon and Jehovah Witness. Many seem to be unreached with the gospel.

What Are Their Needs?

Physical needs are ever present. Many are unreached with the gospel. There is a need to follow God-ordained values and choices. There is a need for hope that transcends the great difficulties faced in daily living.

Prayer Points
