Introduction / History

Mauritius Island, a land area of about 15-by-20 miles long and wide, lies 560 miles east of Madagascar, off east Africa. The island is home for a mixed group including indentured workers, Chinese traders, European settlers and those who descended from slaves. The language they speak is called Morisyan or Mauritian Creole.
Through the years many have settled in other countries to earn a living. Among these are Ireland, the UK, Australia, Canada, Sri Lanka, Belgium and South Africa. The largest migrations of Mauritians to South Africa happened in the 1960s and the 1980s.

Most of the Mauritians in South Africa are tradesmen and professionals. They often have a good education.

Mauritians can be Hindu, Muslim or Christian.
