Introduction / History

The Mukkuvan name comes from the word Moger meaning to dive. Though they are concentrated in the southern states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the Mukkuvan people live in other states as well. The Mukkuvan of India speak, read and write in Malayalam, the language of Kerala.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Fishing is their main source of work. Inheritance goes to both sons and daughters. Their literacy level is improving. They have a community council to look after their interests. In Kerala they can divorce and marry again. They have cross-cousin marriages.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Mukkuvan people practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. At the popular level, Hindus worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. There are other Hindus who are much more philosophical, especially among the Brahmins.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mukkuvan people need to put all their faith in Jesus Christ, the one who came to give abundant life to all who call on His name.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Mukkuvan council leaders come to Jesus Christ and lead others into a Christ-ward movement. Pray for gospel recordings and the JESUS Film to become easily available to them. Pray for intercessors and workers. Pray for spiritual hunger that will lead the Mukkuvan people to the only Savior.
