Hainanese in Cambodia

Hainanese in Cambodia

The Hainanese migrated to Cambodia more than 500 years ago from one of China’s southern islands and settled in Kampot Province on the Cambodian coast. They originally came as farmers, establishing large pepper plantations. Many still live in Kampot Province and Phnom Penh. They work hard, rarely taking time off from work, and they have distinguished themselves as experts in the food catering business. Many manage coffee shops, Chinese noodle houses and other businesses in the food industry. Parents encourage their children to study hard in school. With much of their time spent in school or at work, the Hainanese have little time for entertainment or socializing.

Ministry Obstacles

There is a mindset among East Asians that Jesus is only for other people.

Outreach Ideas

Those who love Christ can be customers at Hainanese-owned noodle houses during slow times, which will give them the chance to participate in spiritual conversations.

Scripture Focus

"But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it."  Mark 10:14-15

Scripture Prayer

Pray that this people group humbles themselves and comes to God with child-like trust and thereby enter into His kingdom.

Prayer Focus

Pray for the few Christian believers among the Hainanese to introduce Christ to others in Cambodia in an active, persistent and loving manner. Pray for the Holy Spirit to bring the Hainanese people in Cambodia into the loving arms of Jesus. Pray for Hainanese disciples to make more disciples who will make even more disciples. Pray for the Lord to bless their businesses as a testimony of his power and goodness.
