The Dewar were once nomadic, but most are now settled. It is unclear what they do for a living. Some say that they raise pigs, and their livestock make up the bulk of their possessions. Others say they beg or entertain by singing and doing tricks with monkeys. Still others say they are a fishing community. Others say that their women design and apply tattoos. Whatever they do, it is not lucrative, and the Dewar are rumored to want more educational opportunities for their children. They can't afford better education because of their poverty. Most of their marital practices are like other scheduled castes. However, they have one interesting custom: the groom must forcefully open the bride's hand to put the wedding ring on her finger.
They have few Christians, and they live in parts of India where almost no one accepts Christ’s lordship.
"Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him, that glory may dwell in our land." Psalm 85:9
Pray for the land of this people group to soon be filled with His glory and mercy!
Pray for the Dewar to give their full devotion to the One who is the Father of life. Pray for the Lord to raise up workers to help them develop their economic lives so that Christ will be glorified. There are many gospel materials in Odia that the Dewar can read or view. Pray for these resources to be utilized by the Dewar.
