While they are not very powerful in Sudan, the Zaghawa politically dominate Chad. A recent president, Idriss Déby, and several former prime ministers of Chad are Zaghawa, as well as many other members of the government. Thus, the Chadian Zaghawa are among the richest and most influential people of Chad. The Zaghawa have been among the tribes in Darfur who have been referred to as “African” even as other tribes that have fought with them have been called “Arab." In 2000 an alphabet based on livestock brands was created for the Zaghawa language. The Zaghawa have not been Muslim for so long that it has taken over their identity. Christ followers can show them the way to the cross.
Following a 20th century people movement to Islam, the Zaghawa in Chad have few, if any, Christ followers among them. Who will go to them?
"Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name." Psalm 33:20-21
May this people group rejoice in the Lord always.
Ask the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers into central Africa to work among the Zaghawa. Ask God to create a hunger within the hearts of the Zaghawa to know the truth. Ask God to raise up prayer teams who will begin breaking up the spiritual soil through worship and intercession. Ask the Lord to bring forth vibrant churches among the Zaghawa for the glory of His name!
