Talysh in Iran

Talysh in Iran

The Talysh live on both sides of the border between Azerbaijan and Iran, along the southwestern coast of the Caspian Sea. Until quite recently there was no cross-border communication and so the Talysh have evolved in two separate directions. It is believed the ancestors of the people were ancient aborigines of the Caucasus and that the region once belonged to the ancient Medes. Later, the region came under the rule of Persia. The Talysh are primarily farmers, raising small grains, including rice. The humid subtropical climate of the Caspian plain is well suited to growing rice. Farmers also raise citrus crops in this area. They are Muslim, mostly Shi'ite.

Ministry Obstacles

Access to the Talysh by outsiders, in both Azerbaijan and Iran, is quite limited.

Scripture Focus

"Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment."  Psalm 51:4

Scripture Prayer

Pray that leaders among this people group will understand the depth of their sin just as King David did.

Prayer Focus

Pray for Christian workers who may be ministering to the Talysh. Pray for their encouragement, for financial provision, and for good health. The JESUS Film and gospel recordings are available in the Talysh language. Pray for ways to make these available to the people. There are indications of some believers among the Talysh in both Azerbaijan and Iran. Pray these Christians would not waver in their faith but will live holy and joyful lives.
