The Wolio primarily live on the island of Buton. The Wolio are at the heart of the culture of Buton. Buton today is known for its production of asphalt and is currently being explored for oil and other minerals. Many people have moved to other islands to find work. At present, some Wolio live in the areas of Maluku and Papua. Primary land crops are rice, corn and cassava. In the sea, especially from June to September, vast stretches of water are used to cultivate agar-agar (seaweed) which is ground up and used to make a variety of products. Almost all Wolio have beliefs centered in Sufi Islam. They practice meditation in order to receive visions from God or to find hidden truths far beyond their own reasoning. They also belive in reincarnation as a result of Hindu influence.
No scripture is reported as available in the Wolio language, though gospel recordings are available.
"As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God." Psalm 42:1
Pray for this kind of longing for the Lord among today’s people group!
There may be a few followers of Jesus today among the Wolio of Indonesia. Pray for these and the many others who will soon join them. Pray they will live holy lives and will fellowship together for encouragement and edification.
