The Pitaguari are an indigenous people who live in the state of Ceará in northeastern Brazil. Their history includes land loss, social marginalization, and long efforts to reclaim identity and recognition.
Pitaguari communities are located near urban and rural areas. Daily life includes agriculture, wage labor, and cultural activities. Community organization and leadership are important for maintaining unity and defending their rights. With an indigenous population in which all members speak Portuguese, the Pitaguari show a tendency toward population growth, thereby refuting the widely promoted idea of the "disappearance" of indigenous peoples in Ceará.
Traditional Pitaguari beliefs emphasize ancestral heritage, spiritual forces, and respect for nature. Rituals and cultural expressions help maintain identity and transmit values across generations. Indigenous self-identification is grounded in a sense of shared origin and common unity, based on kinship ties and often drawing on the memory of ancestors as a resource. This is expressed in statements such as, "because my grandmother was indigenous, my mother was indigenous," "my grandfather was a fierce indigenous man," "these are ancient roots," "everyone here is indigenous, all one thing," and "everyone here knows each other, because everyone grew up together."
The Pitaguari have needs related to land security, social inclusion, and economic opportunity.
Pray for open doors in the job market so they can find employment and have more contact with Christians who preach through their actions, their words, and the Bible.
Pray for God to reveal himself to them as their heavenly father, so they may know they were created in him, rooted in him, and that their identity is built in him alone.
Pray for encounters with the Holy Spirit in ways that nature itself speaks, revealing the glory of God.
