Introduction / History

The Nishang are considered a subgroup of the larger Nyishi people. They live mainly in the northeastern Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Historically, they have been part of the Tani tribes, known for their distinct dialects and cultural practices. Their settlements are often in hilly and forested regions, where they have maintained traditional ways of life while gradually interacting with modern Indian society.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Nishang families rely on agriculture, growing rice, millet, and vegetables. Hunting, fishing, and gathering forest products also supplement their diet and income. Some younger members are moving into government jobs, education, and small businesses. Families are usually extended, with strong respect for elders. Marriage is often arranged within the community, and kinship ties are important for social support. Festivals are tied to agricultural cycles and community rituals. Traditional dances, songs, and feasts are common during celebrations. Their diet includes rice, millet, fish, meat, and vegetables. Fermented foods and rice beer are part of their cultural practices, especially during festivals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Nishang have a mix of traditional animistic practices and Christianity. Traditional beliefs include reverence for nature, spirits, and ancestral rituals. Christianity has grown among them, and many now follow Christian teachings while still retaining aspects of pre-Christian practices. Religious life often blends community traditions with newer practices.

What Are Their Needs?

The Nishang need better access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. Many villages are remote, making transportation and communication difficult. Spiritually, they need continued discipleship and teaching to strengthen their faith and to integrate it with their daily lives. They also need resources in their own language to grow in understanding.

Prayer Items

Pray for improved access to healthcare and education in Nishang villages.
We pray for strong family relationships and community unity as they face modern challenges.
We believe for spiritual growth among those who follow Christ, that they may become Christ's ambassadors to other communities in Sri Lanka.
Pray for the Lord to lift up leaders in the community to guide with wisdom and integrity, both in cultural and spiritual matters.
