Introduction / History

The Yapese are from the Micronesian island of Yap. They have a long history of trading and bartering. There are four languages native to Yap Island. Most remain on their home island, though some have migrated to the United States, mainly Southern California.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Yapese highly value respect and responsibility. Throughout Southern California they have a network of communities that cooperate with other Micronesian ethnic groups.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Roman Catholicism arrived in Yap in the 1880s. Today most are Roman Catholic, though there are Protestants among them. Some still practice their traditional religion, which gave homage to the spirit world. The gospel has a stronger presence among them on Yap Island than in the United States.

What Are Their Needs?

The Yap people need discipleship so they can fully live the Christian life.
