The Tatars are a group of Turkic people in Russia and Ukraine who speak a unique language that is called Kazan Tatar. The name Tatar means "archer." The physical appearance of the Tatar varies from blue-eyed blondes to Mongoloid features. In general, they have oval faces with little facial hair.
The Tatars have had a strong civilization since the tenth century. It has survived the Mongol invasion of the thirteenth century and the Russian conquest of the sixteenth century. In the 1800's, Tatar cities ranked among the greatest cultural centers of the Islamic world.
The Tatar often seek work outside their native region, following a trend of mobility established before 1917 Russian Revolution. They have gone elsewhere for work; some have moved to faraway Canada.
Most Tatars in Canada live in Toronto, Ontario.
The Tatars are a very resilient people. They have survived tragic invasions and deportations numerous times in their history. Hopefully this resilience will pay off as they navigate a new language and culture in Canada.
The Tatars in Canada are mostly Muslims, though there are a small number of Orthodox Christians among them. Tatars are not as strongly Islamic as Muslims are in most parts of the world. Islam is not as strong a part of their identity as it is for most Muslim people groups.
The complete Bible in the Tatar language is still in process. It needs to be an accurate translation.
* Pray that the Word of God will be completed, well-distributed, read, and understood by the Tatar people in Canada.
* Ask God to use Tatar believers to share the love of Jesus with their friends and families.
* Pray that the Lord will raise up loving Canadian Christians to share the Gospel message with the Tatar.
* Ask the Lord to raise up strong local churches among the Tatar.
