Introduction / History

The Seneca are one of the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy and are traditionally known as the "Keepers of the Western Door." Their ancestral homeland spans what is now western New York. Historically, the Seneca were influential in regional diplomacy, agriculture, and long-distance trade. About half live in Canada and the other half in the United States today.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Centuries of land loss, forced displacement, and cultural pressure reshaped their communities, yet they have maintained a strong sense of identity. The Seneca language is endangered but is the focus of revitalization efforts, language classes, and documentation by fluent speakers. Community life often centers around family networks, tribal governance, cultural events, and economic enterprises. The Seneca Nation operates schools, medical facilities, housing programs, and businesses, including tourism and gaming enterprises. Traditional arts—such as beadwork, corn husk dolls, woodcarving, and social dances—remain important expressions of identity. Many Seneca families balance participation in both modern American society and long-standing cultural traditions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Many Seneca people identify as Christian, often through historical mission influence or local church communities. A smaller number participate in evangelical churches. Alongside Christianity, many Seneca continue to practice elements of traditional spirituality, including seasonal ceremonies, respect for the Creator, thanksgiving rituals, and teachings rooted in the Great Law of Peace. The Longhouse religion, revitalized during the 18th and 19th centuries through the teachings of the prophet Handsome Lake, remains an important spiritual path for many families.

What Are Their Needs?

The Seneca people need continued support for language revitalization efforts, as the number of fluent speakers has declined significantly. They also need culturally grounded educational resources that strengthen identity among younger generations. Health needs persist in areas such as diabetes, addiction, and limited access to specialized care; addressing these requires both medical and community-based solutions. There is a need for spiritual encouragement for Christian believers and for relationship-building between churches and the wider Seneca community. Economic development that enhances local employment opportunities while protecting cultural and environmental resources also remains an ongoing need.
