Scots are an ethnic group originating in Scotland, now part of the United Kingdom. Their ancestors emerged from a union of two Celtic peoples, Gaels and Picts. They managed to remain independent, even holding off the Roman Empire at the height of its power. For hundreds of years, the nearby British were invaded and dominated by the Anglo-Saxons and later the Scandinavians. The Scots remained predominantly Celtic, with little domination by invading forces. In the 800s, the Scots established their first kingdom.
Eventually, the British turned the tide. For centuries, Scots defended themselves against the dominant British but eventually were defeated. Through their rule of Scotland, the British cleared the Scots from parts of both the highlands and lowlands, keeping the Scots from making a living. For this and other reasons, there has been a significant exodus of Scots. Among English-speaking peoples, the Scots have the highest percentage of migrants to different parts of the world.
Though some Scots migrated to other parts of Europe or Latin America, they are most likely to be found in other English-speaking countries. The largest one is England, followed by New Zealand, Canada, and Ireland. Those who emigrated in earlier times have usually integrated with the dominant ethnic group.
The number of Scots in Ireland is small. They are outnumbered by the Ulster-Scots, commonly called Scots-Irish. They live the same lifestyle as other people in this country.
Scots are often Presbyterian, but, like most Europeans, they have become secularized. In other words, churches are places for weddings and funerals, but they don t provide guidance.
Fortunately, there are many Scots who follow Christ. They can be a major source of workers spanning the globe and bringing good news to the spiritually lost.
No matter where they live, Scots need a time of spiritual refreshment brought by the Holy Spirit.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to revive Scottish churches and families, driving them into the loving arms of Jesus.
Pray that a renewed spiritual fervor will drive them out as Christ s ambassadors.
Pray that soon Scottish disciples will make more disciples in Ireland.
