Introduction / History

The San Luis Potosí Huasteco, who call themselves Tének or Teenek, are one of the principal Indigenous peoples of the Huasteca region in eastern Mexico. They live primarily in the eastern portion of the state of San Luis Potosí, where their communities are concentrated in the fertile valleys and mountains of the Pánuco River basin. Their language is Huastec.

Their ancestors established thriving communities in the Huasteca long before the arrival of the Spanish. They developed an agricultural society with distinctive artistic, musical, and religious traditions that became part of the broader Huastec civilization. Following the Spanish conquest, the people experienced profound political, economic, and religious changes, yet they retained their language, many traditional customs, and a strong sense of ethnic identity. Their communities have continued to preserve important elements of their heritage despite centuries of outside influence.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today, the San Luis Potosí Huasteco continue to balance their Indigenous identity with participation in modern Mexican society. Many families remain deeply rooted in their ancestral communities while adapting to changing educational opportunities, migration, and economic development. Their language continues to serve as one of the strongest expressions of their identity, although Spanish is increasingly used in schools, government, and commerce.

Most San Luis Potosí Huasteco live in rural villages surrounded by forests, rivers, and fertile farmland. Agriculture continues to shape everyday life, with families cultivating corn, beans, squash, chili peppers, and other traditional crops. Coffee and sugarcane are also important in some areas, while fruit trees and small livestock provide additional sources of food and income. Families often depend on a combination of farming, seasonal employment, and local commerce to support their households.

Family and community relationships remain central to San Luis Potosi Huasteco society. Extended families frequently work together during planting and harvest seasons, participate in community projects, and celebrate important religious and cultural festivals. Elders play an important role in preserving oral traditions, history, and the Huastec language, while younger generations increasingly navigate both Indigenous and national cultures.

The San Luis Potosí Huasteco are well known for their artistic traditions. Music, especially the son huasteco (huapango), plays an important role in community celebrations throughout the Huasteca region. Traditional clothing, embroidery, dance, storytelling, and crafts continue to express cultural identity. Annual celebrations such as Xantolo, the regional observance of the Day of the Dead, remain among the most meaningful expressions of family, faith, and remembrance.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most San Luis Potosí Huasteco identify as Christians, with Roman Catholicism being the predominant religious tradition. Church celebrations, Holy Week, Christmas, and the feasts of local patron saints remain important events that bring families and entire communities together. Religious celebrations often combine worship with music, processions, meals, and community fellowship.

Traditional Indigenous beliefs have also continued to influence the worldview of many San Luis Potosí Huasteco people. Respect for the natural world, traditional healing practices, and beliefs concerning spiritual forces have often been preserved alongside Christian practices. In some communities these traditional perspectives have become intertwined with Catholic observances, producing forms of religious expression that reflect both Indigenous and Christian influences.

Evangelical churches are present throughout parts of the Huasteca region, and San Luis Potosí Huasteco believers increasingly serve within their own communities. Continued access to biblical teaching, discipleship, and Christian resources in the Huastec language can help believers grow in their understanding of Scripture while communicating the gospel naturally within their own culture.

What Are Their Needs?

Many rural communities also face economic challenges that encourage younger adults to migrate in search of employment. Migration can place pressure on family relationships and reduce opportunities for children to learn their language and cultural traditions from older generations. Churches and community leaders have an important role in strengthening families and encouraging younger believers to remain connected to their heritage.

Spiritually, there is an ongoing need for mature, biblically grounded churches led by well-equipped Indigenous believers. Local pastors, teachers, and Christian leaders who minister effectively in the Huastec language are well positioned to disciple new believers and strengthen existing congregations. As the church continues to mature, the San Luis Potosí Huasteco can become a significant missionary force in Latin America.
