Introduction / History

This people group lives in New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea, especially in the Kavieng District on the northern end of New Ireland Island. They belong to the island societies of New Ireland, where coastal villages have long been shaped by seafaring, gardening, kinship ties, and regular contact among nearby communities. Their language is Tigak, also known externally as Omo, an Austronesian language spoken in the Kavieng area.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Tigak Omo live in a coastal and island setting where daily life is closely tied to the sea, village land, and extended family networks. In the Kavieng and northern New Ireland area, ordinary life commonly includes small-scale gardening, fishing, coconut use, local trade, and travel by foot, canoe, or small boat between nearby settlements. Houses are typically simple village homes built from local materials suited to a humid tropical climate. Family and clan obligations remain central, and village life is often shaped by shared labor, kinship ties, and church-centered community rhythms. Their language in ordinary life is Tigak, also known as Omo, and the language area includes the Kavieng district around the provincial capital.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Tigak Omo are identified as Christian, though some traditional ethnic religious influence may remain. The New Testamant is available in their language.

What Are Their Needs?

The Tigak Omo need spiritual depth so that Christian identity is matched by genuine repentance, biblical conviction, and obedience to Christ. Where there is a strong Christian base, the need is for healthy churches, faithful shepherds, sound teaching, and families that live out the gospel clearly. They need protection from nominal Christianity, compromise, and any lingering attachment to older spiritual loyalties. Because they live in a connected coastal region with contact across multiple communities, they also need renewed zeal to carry the gospel beyond their own people and to serve other ethnic groups with faithful witness.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Tigak Omo would grow in genuine repentance, biblical clarity, and joyful obedience to Jesus Christ.
Pray that pastors, elders, and other local leaders would teach Scripture faithfully and lead with humility and courage.
Pray that any remaining attachment to older spiritual practices would be fully surrendered to the lordship of Christ.
Pray for strong Christian families, healthy churches, and enduring discipleship among the Tigak Omo.
Pray that the Tigak Omo would actively reach out to other ethnic groups with the gospel and become a faithful witness beyond their own community.
