Introduction / History

The Mouwase are a small people group of Gulf Province in southern Papua New Guinea, associated with the Omati River area in the Gulf lowlands. They belong to a remote river-and-swamp region where communities have long been shaped by waterways, wetlands, dense forest, and difficult overland travel. External linguistic sources identify Mouwase as one of the two major varieties of the Omati language, a Papuan language of the Turama–Kikorian area.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Mouwase live in the Gulf lowlands, where ordinary life is best understood as village-based and closely tied to rivers, creeks, swampy ground, and forest resources rather than roads. In the Omati River region, communities commonly depend on sago processing, fishing, small garden plots where land allows, hunting, and gathering from surrounding wetland and forest areas. Travel is often by canoe or small boat, while overland movement can be difficult because of mud, flooding, and thick vegetation. Homes in this kind of setting are typically simple village houses built from local materials suited to humid tropical conditions. Family and clan relationships are central, and daily life is usually organized around shared labor, subsistence work, and village cooperation. Their language in ordinary life is Mouwase, recognized externally as a distinct variety within the Omati language cluster.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Mouwase are identified as Christian, though some traditional ethnic religious influence may remain. Scripture portions are available in their Mouwase language.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mouwase need spiritual depth so that Christian identity is matched by genuine repentance, biblical conviction, and obedience to Christ. Where there is a strong Christian base, the need is for healthy churches, faithful shepherds, sound teaching, and families that live out the gospel clearly. They need protection from nominal Christianity, compromise, and any lingering attachment to older spiritual loyalties. Because they live in a remote and difficult lowland setting, they also need enduring local discipleship and leaders who will stand firmly on Scripture. They also need renewed zeal to carry the gospel beyond their own community and to serve other ethnic groups with faithful witness.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Mouwase would grow in genuine repentance, biblical clarity, and joyful obedience to Jesus Christ.
Pray that pastors, elders, and other local leaders would teach Scripture faithfully and lead with humility and courage.
Pray that any remaining attachment to older spiritual practices would be fully surrendered to the lordship of Christ.
Pray for strong Christian families, healthy churches, enduring discipleship, and faithful local leadership among the Mouwase.
Pray that the Mouwase would actively reach out to other ethnic groups with the gospel and become a faithful witness beyond their own community.
