The Huitoto are also known as Witoto. One of their three subgroups is the Muinane.
At one time the Huitoto had 100 villages and 31 subtribes, but their numbers have been decimated by disease and war. They didn’t have contact with Westerners until the early 1600s. Contact remained sporadic until the mid 1900s when there was a rubber boom led by the Peruvian Amazonian Company. Members of the Muinane Huitoto were either displaced, forced into debt servitude or they died from introduced diseases. Today their numbers are far lower than they were 100 years ago.
Muinane Huitoto men use blowguns as a hunting weapon. This tribe uses slash and burn farming to grow manioc, bananas, plantains, pineapples, sugar cane, cotton, cocoa and sweet potatoes. They live in communal homes which include more than one family.
About half of the Muinane Huitoto people have a Christian witness, and they identify as Roman Catholic. A little more than half remain committed to their traditional religious practices.
The Muinane Huitoto people need protection from outsiders who want to use their land and drive them out.
Pray for God to intervene to protect the Muinane Huitoto. May they receive justice and mercy.
Pray for Muinane Huitoto people who love the Lord to disciple others who will disciple more Christians.
Pray for them to have a spiritual hunger and a desire for truth that will lead them to Jesus Christ.
