The Monom are an indigenous ethnic group in Vietnam, part of the larger Xo Dang (Sedang) people, with alternate names including Bonom. They belong to the Mon-Khmer linguistic family and share cultural roots with other highland groups. Their history involves ancient migrations from northern regions, conflicts with neighboring peoples like the Cham and Lao from the 12th to 19th centuries, and resistance against colonial forces. They participated in historical battles, providing warriors and resources to dynasties, and maintained a reputation for combativeness in the Central Highlands.
The Monom practice slash-and-burn agriculture, clearing land to cultivate rice and other crops, while raising livestock such as buffalo, goats, pigs, dogs, and chickens. Some engage in planting cinnamon trees, blacksmithing for tools, and weaving fabrics from jute or ramie. Family dynamics center on extended households living in small rectangle-shaped stilt houses, with the upper level for people and the lower for animals and storage; villages often feature a central communal house for social gatherings. Celebrations include folk festivals tied to the agricultural cycle, such as rituals for sowing seeds in early July and honoring green rice in early August, involving communal music and dance. Food revolves around rice as a staple, harvested by hand and prepared with meats from livestock, supplemented by vegetables and foraged items during village meals.
The Monom primarily follow ethnic religions, incorporating animistic practices that involve spirits, ancestral worship, and traditional legends like a great flood sent by a creator deity. Some identify with Christianity, but faith in Christ is overshadowed by faith in the spirit world.
Access to reliable education and medical services is restricted in their remote highland locations, hindering community development. Better infrastructure, including roads and water systems, would enhance daily life and economic prospects. Opportunities for encountering the gospel remain scarce, limiting spiritual engagement with Christian teachings.
Pray that Monom communities will receive the good news of Jesus Christ and experience transformation through faith.
Pray for improved healthcare and protection from diseases prevalent in rural areas.
Pray that existing believers among the Monom will be strengthened to share the gospel with their neighbors.
Pray for sustainable agricultural practices and relief from poverty challenges.
Pray that the love of Jesus will draw the Monom into active participation in global missions.
