The Moba are a mainly agricultural group settled along northern Togo in villages of extended family groups. Legends of their origin tell of immigrants from Fada N 'Gourma who rode in on the backs of hartebeests, and other Moba who came down on a rope from heaven.
The traditional religion of ancestral worship is a common part of their lives. Even those who call themselves Christians, especially the Catholics, are likely to take part in sacrifices to placate the spirit world. The Catholic Church and the Assemblies of God first began working with the Moba in the late 1930s. In the 1970s, the Pentecostal, Lutheran, and Southern Baptist missions also began church planting in the Moba area which presently has about 70 churches. The Moba Christians are growing at a steady rate but seem to be lacking a firm faith grounded on studying the New Testament, which is now available. This poses a problem for understanding the Lord and relating to His love within their daily lives. In addition to the need for studying the Bible, there are basic needs for reliable water supply and adequate health care.
