Introduction / History

The Mehek, (AKA, Indinogosima) is an indigenous people of Sandaun Province in Papua New Guinea, living in rural communities along the rugged foothills and valleys near the headwaters of the Sepik River. Their identity is closely tied to the Mehek language, a Papuan language of the Sepik family that unites villages in this part of the province. Over generations they have maintained a distinctive cultural and linguistic heritage shaped by life along forested hills, creeks, and community trails.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Mehek communities are typically rural and village?based. Daily life centers on subsistence activities such as gardening, fishing, hunting, and gathering. Families cultivate staple foods in small garden plots, including root crops and vegetables that form the basis of daily meals. Waterways are important for fishing and travel, connecting villages with one another and with nearby regions.

Social organization is rooted in extended family networks, and cooperation among relatives is essential for planting and harvesting crops, building homes, and nurturing children and elders. Village life includes shared work, community gatherings, and cultural practices that bind families together across generations. People often use Tok Pisin or other regional languages when interacting with neighboring groups, markets, or towns.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the predominant religious identity among the Mehek people, with church life playing an important role in community and family life. Christian worship, teaching, and fellowship help shape moral values and daily relationships within villages.

In some settings, traditional understandings about spiritual forces or ancestral influence may still shape how certain events are interpreted, especially matters related to health or misfortune. Within this context, continued biblical teaching and discipleship remain important so that believers grow in a clear understanding of the gospel and the saving work of Jesus Christ alone.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mehek people benefit from discipleship that strengthens their understanding of scripture and deepens their faith in Jesus Christ. Encouraging and equipping local pastors and church leaders helps communities grow in faithful biblical teaching and spiritual maturity.

Access to scripture and Christian teaching resources in the Mehek language supports families in engaging deeply with God's word. Opportunities to train and develop younger leaders can also help build a strong foundation for the future of the church among the Mehek. Alongside spiritual growth, improvements in access to education, healthcare, and sustainable livelihoods can contribute to the overall well?being of families and villages.

Prayer Items

Pray that Mehek believers will grow in spiritual maturity and develop a deep love for the word of God.
Pray for pastors and church leaders to be strengthened with wisdom and faithfulness as they shepherd their congregations.
Pray that families and young people will follow Jesus Christ wholeheartedly and build strong Christian homes.
Pray that the churches among the Mehek will remain united and active in sharing the gospel with neighboring peoples who lack an adequate witness of Christ's glory and goodness.
