Introduction / History

The Maralango are a people of Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea, in the Watut River region west of Lae. They belong to the inland communities of the lower Markham and Watut corridor, where village life has long been shaped by river valleys, forested hills, and close kinship ties. Their language is South Watut, and Maralango is identified as one of its dialect groupings.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Maralango live in the Watut River area, where village life is commonly organized around river valleys, garden land, and foot travel between settlements. In this kind of Morobe interior setting, ordinary life typically centers on small-scale gardening, especially root crops and other subsistence foods, with hunting, fishing in nearby waterways, and local exchange also shaping daily rhythms. Homes are generally simple village houses built from local materials suited to a humid tropical environment. Family and clan obligations are central, and village life is often structured around shared labor, kinship ties, and church-centered community patterns. Their language in ordinary life is South Watut, specifically the Maralango dialect.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Maralango are identified as Christian, with Protestant Christianity strongly represented. They need the Scriptures translated into their heart language.

What Are Their Needs?

The Maralango need strong biblical discipleship so that a strong Christian identity is matched by genuine repentance, biblical conviction, and obedience to Christ. Where there is a strong Christian base, the need is for healthy churches, faithful shepherds, sound teaching, and families that live out the gospel clearly. They need protection from nominal Christianity, compromise, and any lingering attachment to older spiritual loyalties. They also need renewed zeal to carry the gospel beyond their own community and to serve other ethnic groups with faithful witness.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Maralango would grow in genuine repentance, biblical clarity, and joyful obedience to Jesus Christ.
Pray that pastors, elders, and other local leaders would teach Scripture faithfully and lead with humility and courage.
Pray that the churches among the Maralango would be spiritually strong, doctrinally sound, and fruitful in discipleship.
Pray for strong Christian families, healthy churches, and enduring gospel witness among the Maralango.
Pray that the Maralango would actively reach out to other ethnic groups with the gospel and become a faithful witness beyond their own community.
