Introduction / History

The Mamusi are a people of East New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea, in the interior of New Britain Island. They belong to the forested hill and mountain communities of western East New Britain, where villages have long been shaped by rugged terrain, relative isolation, and close kinship ties. Their language is Mamusi, an Austronesian language spoken in this part of New Britain.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Mamusi live in an inland New Britain setting where village life is commonly organized around forested slopes, mountain paths, and cultivated garden land rather than major roads. In this kind of environment, ordinary life typically centers on small-scale gardening and subsistence food production, with travel often relying on footpaths between villages. Homes are generally simple village houses built from local materials suited to a humid tropical climate. Family and clan relationships are central, and daily life is shaped by reciprocal labor, marriage ties, and village cooperation. Their language in ordinary life is Mamusi.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Mamusi are identified as Christian, with Roman Catholicism strongly represented, though evangelical witness is still needed.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mamusi need strong biblical discipleship so that a broadly Christian identity is matched by genuine repentance, clear understanding of the gospel, and faithful obedience to Christ. Where there is a strong Christian base but limited evangelical depth, the need is for healthy churches, sound doctrine, mature believers, and leaders who handle Scripture faithfully. They need protection from nominal Christianity, compromise, and any lingering attachment to older spiritual loyalties. They also need renewed zeal to carry the gospel beyond their own people and to serve other ethnic groups with faithful witness.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Mamusi would move beyond mere Christian identification into deep, saving faith and joyful obedience to Jesus Christ.
Pray that pastors, catechists, elders, and other local leaders would teach biblical truth clearly and faithfully.
Pray that the Lord would strengthen genuine discipleship, sound doctrine, and spiritually healthy churches among the Mamusi.
Pray that any remaining attachment to older spiritual practices or empty formalism would be fully surrendered to the lordship of Christ.
Pray that the Mamusi would actively reach out to other ethnic groups with the gospel and become a faithful witness beyond their own community.
